Heilongtan (Black Dragon Pool)
Heilongtan (Black Dragon Pool) is located at the base of the Wulao Peak of the Dragon Spring Hill, in the northern suburbs of Kunming. There is an ancient temple known as the "Number One Ancient Temple in central Yunnan", which is famous for its four unique features including the Temple of the Han nationality, Plum of the Tang Dynasty, Cypress of the Song Dynasty and Tea of the Ming Dynasty.

According to history, there was a black water temple in the northwestern part of the Dianchi County during the Han Dynasty. Legend has it that the Dragon King of Yunnan - the Black Dragon - used to live in a palace under the water. The pool water was inexhaustible, thus people called it the "Black Dragon Pool". During the Tang and Song dynasties, people in Kunming often came to the pool to pray for rain.

Lin Zexu, a Qing general who ordered the ban on opium dumped by Britain, was said to have prayed for rain here on behalf of the local people. The story goes that when he came to the pool, instead of burning incense or offering sacrifices, he shouted towards the pool, saying "You listen, Black Dragon. I am Lin Zexu, the governor of Yunnan and Guizhou. Although you are the Dragon King, you are living in my territory and so you must act upon my orders. The people are suffering from drought. I order you to bring rain here immediately." No sooner had he finished, rain clouds gathered and it began to pour. Even today, the legend lives, and Lin Zexu is considered a hero of the Yunnan people.

A stone bridge divides The Black Dragon Pool into a muddy pool and a clear pool. The uniqueness of the Black Dragon Pool lies on the fact that the two pools have completely different colors although they are linked to each other. The secret lies in the depths of the pools. The clear pool is deeper, with water spewing from a fountain at the very bottom, hence its water is clear. The muddy pool is shallow, with muddy water flowing into it from outside, and hence it lacks clarity.

There are also two Taoist temples, built during the Ming Dynasty, nearby. The Black Dragon Pool Plum Garden, which is the largest plum garden (about 28.4 hectares) in China, has a collection of nearly 90 varieties of plum trees. Admission fee: 2 Yuan Contact Telephone: (0871) 3845448
